Welcome to the Medical Clinic at the Interplanetary Relay Station by Caroline M. Yoachim. Or Alphabetized Medicine is fun.

I don’t normally review short stories on my blog, unless they are exceptional, and Yaochim’s short in Lightspeed Magazine is a clear exception. I had to give this one a shot in honor of all the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books when I was much younger. This time, however, Yachim anticipates that I won’t follow the rules: “Q. There is nothing in the story that directs you to this section, so if you are reading this, you have failed to follow instructions. Go directly to… Or skip to somewhere else, since you clearly aren’t playing by the rules anyway.”

The adolescent joke about one of the clinic nurse’s species made me laugh out loud, along with author asides. I rather appreciate the digs at the medical/insurance system. The nice bit of nihilist philosophy around letter ‘S’ also made me laugh, although it probably shouldn’t have. Damn those rashes! I’ll definitely have to check out more by Yoachim.
