The Rape Trope

Rape in fantasy and sci-fi

Drives me crazy.

Watch “Read for Pixels: Trashing the Rape Trope” with Martha Wells, Kate Elliot, and Jim C. Hines. The meat starts around 7:00.

Mm. What that Hines guy said there. Writing is supposedly a cerebral art, but how many of us writers just instinctively turn off our brains when something complicated turns up on the page we’re writing?

(I admit I didn’t listen to the panel for long, but sadly, I get the gist…)

I listened to it for quite a while, because I really like all the writers as people. I’m iffy on Hines’ ability to translate his ideas into his writing in a clear way (his nymph character comes off like a male-geek fantasy-chick, not a person), and I don’t like Elliot’s stories, but I love their willingness to share and articulate these thoughts to fantasy writerdom, which relies far too much on the rape trope. I meant this page as a vent spot when I get on a soapbox, but that video came up recently and I didn’t want to lose it. 🙂
